THE Vespa GS 150
is widely regarded as the embodiment of the Vespa concept in its purest form.
First introduced in 1955 as the top model in the Vespa range, it quickly
established a reputation for outstanding performance and turbine-like
smoothness.
Originally designated the VS1, this scooter went through minor changes each year
culminating in the VS5, which was produced from 1959 until 1962 when it was
replaced by the totally new 160 Gran Sport.
Prior to the Gran Sport introduction, Vespas were regarded as basic transport.
This model has curves everywhere and even the dual seat is specifically designed
to blend in with the styling of the machine. The wheel size rose from 20.3cm
(8in) to 25.4cm (10in), and with a top speed of around 96km/h (60mph) the
performance was exceptional for the time. The cornering and general handling are
excellent, losing the severe lop-sided feel of earlier models whilst still
retaining the same basic design. Some enthusiasts claim that GS 150′s
roadholding is the best of any Vespa, even when compared with those designed up
to 40 years later. The offset motor has little adverse effect once underway, and
the smooth powerplant delivers its 8 horsepower at 7500rpm giving very lively
acceleration and superb high speed cruising ability.
Below: Timeless
elegance and turbine-like smoothness makf the GS150 one of the best scooters of
all time.

A twist grip on the left handlebar controls a close ratio four-speed gear-box
which for the most part doesn’t need the clutch to change.
There is no chassis as the whole body is made out of a set of lightweight
pressings which are spot-welded to form the spine, rear body and leg-shields.
This simple construction, which uses very few parts, owes much to Piaggio’s
experience as aircraft manufacturers.
The motor adopts the same basic configuration as its compact predecessors. The
end result of all
the minor changes that went into was the creation of a world beating superior to
its ancestors or indeed a scooter. Performance and handling almost legendary.
This is the result conjunction of design and construction that occurs so very rarely; a unique
blend that machine that is much greater than individual parts.

VS4.
The riding position is good and controls are smooth in operation. Everything is
where it should be for fast confident riding.
Although produced in volume, this is one scooter that is avidly collected
worldwide. Even some fanatical motorcyclists, who would deride all scooters on
principle, have been known to make an exception after trying the GS. They
concede that this, at least, is a true classic with outstanding abilities.
All models of the GS 150 were only available in silver grey. They quicldy became
popular and established the benchmark for others to attempt to emulate.
If the Gran Sport has a weakness, it is its willingness to just keep on revving
faster and faster until, in uncaring hands, it can destroy itself. Given
sensible use, it is very reliable and will deliver very high mileage.
In the 1990s the GS is still a delight to use and more than capable of covering
vast distances with ease.
